Indeed I’ve always thought one of the great advantages of humanism is precisely that it doesn’t need a priesthood, it doesn’t need constant reinforcement. People can come to it themselves as a logical conclusion. And many people do. It’s one of its strengths. He had a respect for Christian belief but I remember one of the things he said: he said he’d never met a Christian who believed in the existence of heaven and hell as much as they believed in the existence of Australia.

Lang niet altijd ben ik het met hem eens, en toch link ik op dit weblog behoorlijk vaak naar de daden of uitspraken van Christopher Hitchens. Hij heeft éen groot voordeel als schrijver en dwarskijker. Hij weet me altijd weer aan het lachen te maken.

Neem nu bijvoorbeeld dat optreden laatst in New York, waarin hij een club met brave Amerikanen ging uitleggen dat ze niet in God moeten geloven.

Tegelijk denk ik niet dat zijn boek god is Not Great mij zal aanspreken. Recensente Amanda Bragg noemde het een te snel geschreven boekje, dat vooral even op de anti-God hype lijkt in te spelen. Daniel C. Dennett is beleefder in zijn afwegingen, maar toch niet onkritisch.

Ook Hitchens’ boekje dat ik zelf dezer dagen las, leek me nogal haastig in elkaar gezet. Maar ach, zijn charme vergoedt soms veel. Al heb ik hem inmiddels door.

A man who supported the previous oppressors of the region—the Soviet army in Afghanistan and Saddam Hussein in Iraq—who supports its current oppressors—Bashar Assad and his Lebanese proxies—and who still has time to endorse its potential future tyrants in the shape of the jihadists in Iraq and elsewhere. Galloway began his political life as a fifth-rate apologist for the Soviet Union, but he has now diversified into being an apologist for Stalinism, for fascism, and for jihadism all at once!

Veel van hen die zich filosofen noemen, verhullen wat ze te zeggen hebben met wantaal;

Uitgeven is dan weer totaal geen exacte wetenschap. Het uitgeven is vooral gebaseerd op hoop;
Zijn er dan helemaal geen zekerheden in die branche?

Many categories of books will be subsumed by digital media. Reference publishing has already migrated online. Practical nonfiction will be next, winding up on Web sites that can easily update and disseminate visual and textual information. Bovendien deed Van Rossem de belangrijkste onthulling uit het blad maandag al, in het radioprogramma Kunststof. Hij vindt de Amerikaanse presidentsverkiezingen geen feest meer. En noemt de belangstelling van de Nederlandse media voor het evenement tot nu toe zelfs overdreven;

Nu goed, wie leest wat voor rabiate onzin er nu al over Barack Obama verspreid wordt, kan het niet anders als met Van Rossem eens zijn;

Bij Maarten van Rossem speelt nog iets anders. Die moet ik horen spreken — en dan moet hij ook nog de uitdrukking ‘geen reet’ vermijden als overtreffende trap;
Van Rossem op schrift is doorgaans aanmerkelijk minder uniek. Zelfs al lees ik zijn boeken wel met plezier;

Iedereen heeft het altijd over het TV-programma Zomergasten — de gastenlijst voor dit jaar haalde weer alle kranten — maar ik ben nu al jaren meer geïnteresseerd in een vergelijkbaar VPRO-programma, op de radio;

Fark-nieuws, in de categorie Nederlandse media kopiëren blind wat in buitenlandse media al te onnozel voor woorden was:
Vrouwen nemen de blogwereld over, melden Volkskrant en Nu.nl;
En die heerschappij bestaat er dan uit dat een traditioneel mediabedrijf iets investeert in een weblog-collectief dat al jaren bestond. Vervolgens worden er allerhande nieuwtjes bijgesleept om van een trend te kunnen spreken. Dat is zo simpel gedacht dat het hele bericht daardoor belachelijk wordt;
Bovendien, zelfs voor Jorn Barger het begrip weblog muntte, waren er al duizenden vrouwen actief met dagboeken online. Toen heetten die journals, of live journals, nu zouden ze stuk voor stuk weblogs genoemd worden;
Het bestaan van een verschijnsel gaat meestal aan de naam voor het verschijnsel vooraf – dat is een wet;
Maar zij die alleen de naam van een verschijnsel kennen, en niet de geschiedenis, zijn gedoemd tot onnozelheid – dat is het tweede artikel van dezelfde wet;

The Caged Virgin

The Dutch current affairs program Zembla looked into Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s past, and broadcasts the results tomorrow. While implying in a promo she’s done wrong.

But prophets can’t do anything right in their own country, says Christopher Hitchens as well:

In spite of testimony from the Dutch police, who assured the court that the building was now one of the safest in all Holland, a court has upheld the demand from her neighbors and fellow citizens that she be evicted from her home. In these circumstances, she is considering resigning from parliament and perhaps leaving her adopted country altogether. This is not the only example that I know of a supposedly liberal society collaborating in its own destruction, but I hope at least that it will shame us all into making The Caged Virgin a best seller.

The day before a TV documentary about Ayaan Hirsi Ali would lead to news headlines in the whole world I linked to a piece by Cristopher Hitchens about her.

Somehow, it seems right to round the brouhaha off with another piece by him, on her.

The minister in the present case—a former prison warden named Rita Verdonk—comes off less as a Kafka figure than as a cross between Nurse Ratched and Capt. Renault in Casablanca, who was “shocked, shocked” to find out what was going on at Rick’s Cafe. A prisoner of her own rectitude, she has decided that now is the time to display zero tolerance for refugees who falsify their biographies.

And, while I am at it, let’s not forget Ian Buruma’s words in the NY Times:

Rita Verdonk was only a particularly extreme and unimaginative exponent of this new mood. One of her wildly impractical suggestions, mostly shot down in Parliament, was that only Dutch should be spoken in the streets. It was she who sent back vulnerable refugees to places like Syria and Congo. It was under her watch that asylum seekers were put in prison cells after a fire had consumed their temporary shelter and killed 11 at the Amsterdam airport. She was the one who decided to send a family back to Iraq because they had finessed their stories, even though human rights experts had warned that they would be in great danger. This was part of her vaunted “straight back.”

Overnight guests at his mosque’s sleeping quarters have included Richard Reid, the man in whose honor we now all have to take off our shoes at the airport, and Zacarias Moussaoui, the missing team member of September 11, 2001.

It’s one of those occasions, like a World Cup or a royal wedding, when it is assumed on all sides that you, too, want to be part of the fun. At any rate, you are counted in whether you fancy it or not. You may even be accosted and asked to tell people what your resolutions for the coming year may be.

My answer is the same as usual. I resolve to lie low, de-carbonise the liver, recharge the batteries, save the money, catch up on the slumber and begin 2004 with a head start on the sorry figures who didn’t have as good a time as they had expected on the night before.
